Zither. Zithers like this one from Stuttgart, Germany are the precursors to the modern Autoharp. The zither’s five melody strings are fretted by the left hand at the same time both melody and accompaniment strings are plucked by the right hand using finger picks. The instrument still holds great popularity in Germany.
