Why is oil important in the history of Allen County? In 1885, the world’s largest oil field, which covered most of northwestern Ohio and much of northeastern Indiana, was found in Allen County, causing a boom in local industry. This lecture will go into a layman’s description of that early oil drilling in Allen County and its history, as well as highlighting the three crucial men that impacted the local oil industry: John W. Van Dyke, John D. Rockefeller, and Herman Frasch Jr.
